Cancer is not only a medical experience. It is emotional, physical, and social, and it can feel overwhelming both during and after treatment. But you don’t have to navigate the journey alone.
The six-week Moving Forward program brings participants together in a supportive environment where they can focus on healing, rebuilding confidence, and connecting with others who truly understand what they are going through.
Through a combination of support groups, movement, and nutrition guidance, participants gain practical tools and emotional support to help them move forward with their lives. This program is designed for individuals currently in treatment or who have completed treatment within the past year. Space is limited to create a supportive and personalized group experience.

A cancer diagnosis can change everything. The treatments, the appointments, the uncertainty - it can feel overwhelming both during and after treatment. But you don’t have to navigate the journey alone.
At The Gathering Place, the Moving Forward Program is designed to help individuals currently in treatment or who have completed treatment within the past year reconnect with their strength, confidence, and community.
Through a combination of support groups, movement, and nutrition guidance, participants gain practical tools and emotional support to help them move forward with their lives.
For participant Jill Shemory, the Moving Forward program became something she never expected: a lifeline. Jill has been living with cancer since 2014 and continues to navigate treatment today. Through the Moving Forward program, she found strength, connection, and a renewed sense of self.
“Doctors help treat my cancer. The Gathering Place helps me live my life,” said Jill.
Jill credits the program with helping her regain perspective during an incredibly difficult time. “Moving Forward gave me my identity back. It resets you. It takes you out of your fear mindset.” More than a decade after participating, Jill still meets regularly with members of her group. “We met in one group and years later, we’re still showing up for each other.”
For many participants, the friendships and support created during Moving Forward last far beyond the program itself. As Jill explains: “You don’t just survive cancer. You learn how to live with it.”
Cancer is not only a medical experience. It is emotional, physical, and social.
The six-week Moving Forward program brings participants together in a supportive environment where they can focus on healing, rebuilding confidence, and connecting with others who truly understand what they are going through.
Participants benefit from:
• Weekly support groups led by experienced clinical staff
• Twice-weekly fitness sessions designed for individuals in treatment
• Interactive nutrition sessions focused on whole-person wellness
• Community connection with others navigating cancer
• Guidance from trusted facilitators who meet participants where they are
All programs at The Gathering Place are offered at no cost to participants and families.
Participants in the Moving Forward program are guided by experienced staff who understand the emotional realities of cancer.
Jill credits the guidance of the clinical team, including clinical social worker Mary Bornstein, with helping participants move through some of the most challenging moments of the cancer journey.
“Mary is so grounded and seasoned. She meets you exactly where you are. She helps elevate you, take you out of your fear mindset, and gently push you outside your comfort zone in a way that helps you reset and move forward.”
Participants also benefit from trusted resources, including medical librarian Eileen Coan, whom Jill describes as “a superb wealth of information,” along with guidance from our nutrition and fitness staff.
