Race for the Place in support of The Gathering Place, takes place the first Sunday in June on National Cancer Survivors Day. Race for the Place, a 5K and 1 Mile run/walk, is a wonderful celebration of cancer survivors and an opportunity to raise money to support the free programs and services provided at The Gathering Place to help children, teens, adults, individuals, families and friends cope while on the cancer journey.

Let's come together to celebrate those who have survived, inspire those who have been diagnosed, support our families and connect with our great community.

Why We Race

What motivated you to create a team for Race for the Place?
I created a team for Race for the Place in honor of my Aunt Debra, who I loved dearly and lost to pancreatic cancer in 2021. She was such a strong, loving presence in my life, and I wanted to find a way to carry her memory forward in a meaningful way. I'm Italian, and family means everything to me—so when I learned about The Gathering Place, I knew it was something I had to be part of. I joined the Rising Leaders Council because of Aunty Deb, and Race for the Place is one way I continue to honor her and support others walking similar paths.

What can you say to someone who is considering creating a team? Why should they?
Creating a team is an act of love. It’s a chance to rally your people and stand up for someone you care about—or for everyone who’s ever heard the words “you have cancer.” You’ll be surprised by how healing it is to walk alongside others who truly understand.

What do you like about Race for the Place?
There’s nothing like it. The energy, the emotion, the sense of unity—it’s incredibly powerful. It’s more than a race—it’s a celebration of life, legacy, and resilience. Everyone there has a story, and that connection is what makes it so special.

What initially drew you to TGP?
What drew me to The Gathering Place was the heart behind everything they do. They’re there for the whole person—and the whole family—during one of life’s hardest journeys. That kind of support is rare and so needed!

What are a couple of heartfelt moments you'd like to share about your experience(s) with TGP?
Seeing families come together on race day is always emotional. I remember a little girl holding a sign that said “For my Nonna.” It instantly brought tears to my eyes. I thought of my aunt and the way our family showed up for each other. That’s the spirit of TGP.

What strong message about TGP would you like to share with the community?
The Gathering Place is a lifeline. It brings comfort, connection, and care when you need it most. In a world that can feel overwhelming, TGP shows up with heart. And that means everything, especially to families like mine.
